    Environmental Soup

    What are you living in? (air, water, EMF, mold, toxins)

    Your body is responding to its environment right now. Not occasionally. Continuously.

    The air in your bedroom at 2am. The water coming out of your tap every morning. The mold behind the wall you can't see. The CO2 building up in a closed office while you work, affecting your brain function. These are not risks you can outrun. They are measurable inputs to your nervous system, your immune system, your hormones, and your metabolism, running in the background of every intervention you have ever tried.

    This is what I call environmental soup. You are swimming in it. Most of it has never been named, let alone measured.

    Why this matters clinically

    When someone is doing everything right and still not getting better, the environment is usually where I look next. Not as a last resort. As a missing variable.

    The body does not operate in isolation from its surroundings. It adapts to them. If the environment is chronically loading the nervous system, suppressing sleep quality, or adding to an already-taxed immune system, the clinical work inside the office hits a ceiling. You come in, we make progress, you go home and walk back into the same conditions. The body recalibrates to what it is surrounded by.

    Measuring your environment is not optional once you understand this. It is part of the clinical picture.

    What is actually measurable

    Air quality.

    Indoor air is frequently worse than outdoor air, and most people have no data on what they are breathing. The variables that matter most clinically: CO2 accumulation (which suppresses HRV and degrades sleep architecture at levels that impair function), radon (colorless, odorless, the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US, present in most homes at some level and almost never tested), particulate matter from cooking, candles, and wildfire smoke, VOCs from building materials and cleaning products, and humidity (sustained levels above 50-55% drive mold growth and respiratory load even without visible evidence).

    I monitor all of these in my own home and office. Outdoor air runs around 400-420 ppm CO2. My bedroom was running 3,000 ppm overnight with the door closed. At that level your brain is running hypoxic all night, sluggish cognition, poor sleep quality, waking unrefreshed. That feeling that you can't quite breathe, that you never fully rest, that your mind is foggy before the day even starts, it may be stale air, not sleep apnea, not just stress. No supplement addresses that. Measuring does.

    Water quality.

    Your utility's annual report tells you what left the treatment plant. It does not tell you what comes out of your specific tap. The EWG Tap Water Database (ewg.org/tapwater) is a free starting point. Enter your zip code and see every contaminant detected above health guidelines in your water supply. For your actual tap data, a Tap Score panel tests what you are drinking after it has traveled through your building's pipes. I ordered panels for both my home and office, with a PFAS add-on, because the Clackamas River supply serving Milwaukie has documented contaminants worth knowing about.

    Mold and mycotoxins.

    Standard mold testing identifies which species are present. EMMA testing from RealTime Labs goes further: it tells you whether those molds are actively producing toxins, and which specific mycotoxins are in your dust. That distinction matters. An inactive mold species is a different clinical situation than one actively producing trichothecenes or ochratoxin. If you have unexplained fatigue, histamine reactivity, cognitive fog, or immune dysregulation that has not fully resolved, environmental mycotoxin load is worth ruling out.
